- PRIAM TO CUT WORKFORCE BY 25 PERCENT
- ------------------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- Glenn O. Maddalon, chairman of the board and chief executive officer
- of PRIAM Corp. said, "As previously reported, the demand for the company's
- products is lower than anticipated.
-
- "We are consolidating and streamlining many operations in an effort to bring
- the cost structure more in line with current revenues. This reduction in
- force, which started today, will reduce the company's worldwide workforce
- approximately 25 percent, or 230 employees, over the next month."
-
- Founded in 1978 to provide high-performance, high-capacity Winchester disk
- drives for the original equipment manufacturer market, Priam's product
- strategy is to adapt mainframe Winchester disk drive technology to cost-
- effective use in mini and microcomputers. The company's line of 8-, 5.25-,
- and 3.5-inch disk drives ranges in capacity from 40 to 760 megabytes.

- MEMORYBANK MANAGER 3.0 ALLOWS FOR
- UNATTENDED MACINTOSH BACKUP
- ---------------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- A new feature for Northern Telecom's Memorybank disk and tape
- storage system allows Macintosh workstation users to conveniently and
- automatically back up their local disks across a network to the Memorybank.
-
- Memorybank Manager 3.0, the latest utility software update for the system,
- allows users to specify whether they want full disk backup or incremental
- backup, and to set the day or days each week that backup should occur.
-
- The backup process occurs when the network manager chooses to back up the
- Memorybank disk, the workstation disks, or both to the tape drive during an
- off-peak usage period, usually after business hours.
-
- The backup takes place without shutting down the network, and users can have
- their workstations shut down automatically after the data is recorded on the
- Memorybank. Memorybank Manager 3.0 also introduces mixed disk partitions,
- allowing Macintosh OS, A/UX, and other formats to reside on one Memorybank.

- PRIME TO DEVELOP DOS EXTENDERS
- ------------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- Prime Computer Inc. is focusing research and development efforts on
- DOS extenders and plans to offer a DOS extended version of its Personal
- Designer micro-based CAD software before year's end.
-
- A DOS extender is a software tool that allows DOS software applications, such
- as Personal Designer, to exceed the maximum 640k memory limitations of
- standard DOS. A DOS extender allows use of up to 16 megabytes of additional
- memory.
-
- By using DOS extenders and being able to load Personal Designer software into
- extended memory, users should notice significantly improved performance.
- Also, DOS extenders free up RAM, leaving more space for other resident
- programs such as networking software.
-
- The software is currently available in both DOS and UNIX Editions. It runs
- on a variety of micro-based platforms including the SPARCstation and SUN386i
- from Sun Microsystems Inc., and a wide range of 386- and 286-based IBM-
- compatible personal computers.

- LOTUS 1-2-3 A
- HIT IN JAPAN
- -------------
-
- (BPS) -- The cumulative sales of Lotus' Japanese version of Lotus 1-2-3 have
- surpassed 200,000 units in less than three years, driving the spreadsheet
- category to become the fastest-growing sector of microcomputer software in
- Japan.
-
- According to the July issue of Nikkei Byte magazine, spreadsheets have become
- the growth area in Japanese PC software. Shipments of spreadsheets are
- increasing at a 50 percent rate each year, and no fewer than eight Japanese
- spreadsheets have been introduced in 1989.
-
- The product at the heart of this trend is the Japanese 1-2-3, which holds the
- number 1 position in the Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun ranking of Japan's best-selling
- business software.
-
- Over time, the rate of sale has accelerated dramatically. It took two years,
- or until August 1988, for Lotus Development Japan Limited -- the company's
- Japanese subsidiary -- to sell the first 100,000 units of the Japanese 1-2-3,
- and less than a year more to reach the level of 200,000 units sold.

- FIRST PORTABLE CD ROM
- DESIGNED FOR LAPTOPS
- ---------------------
-
- (BPS) -- GRiD Systems Corp. is the first company to ship a portable CD ROM
- drive designed for battery-powered laptop computers, a move expected to boost
- the sale of GRiD laptops in markets requiring massive amounts of storage
- capacity.
-
- The model MXV-101 GRiD/Magnavox CD ROM drive was developed by the Northern
- Virginia Systems Group of Magnavox Electronic Systems Co. and is being sold
- under a joint marketing partnership between GRiD and Magnavox.
-
- Weighing under 5 pounds and compact in size, the portable CD ROM unit allows
- retrieval of up to 550 Mb of data including large, mass stored archival
- documents such as maintenance manuals, encyclopedias, and legal and medical
- data.
-

- The GRiD/Magnavox CD ROM is priced at $1,900 per kit, which includes the CD
- ROM peripheral and an SCSI adapter cartridge and associated software driver.

-
- Price cuts on 386/25 machines: Model 60, reduced from $8,299 to $7,999; Model
- 110, from $10,299 to $8,999; and Model 300, from $13,299 to $11,999. Price

-
- The prices cuts, ranging from 4 to 12 percent, were made to combat current

- and other companies.

- INDUSTRY RUMORS:
- ----------------
-
- -- Maxtor drives may show up in distress sales at about a buck a megabyte;
- $400 for 380 Mb drives.
-
- -- Comdex EISA watchers predict abut 50 new cans with the bluster bus inside,
- and as many as 6 to 10 with Micro Channel.
-
- -- 486 clone motherboards starting to show up with mixed stories on chip
- speed yields.
-
- -- Higher clock speeds have the RAM chip bakers licking their lips, since
- higher prices come with faster clicks.
-
- -- Some EISA protos run EISA in EISA boards fine; run old boards OK; but
- choke with a mix.
-
- -- Coming at Comdex -- a new PS/2 with multi CPU slots, plus a big new MCA
- Developers Program.
-
- -- IBM and almost all the MCA clonemakers will be building SCSI into all
- their new machines.
-
- -- Confirmation this week on rumor of a new GrandView, but still few details.
